One way to verify a leak is the bucket test. Fill a bucket 3/4 full of water then mark the water level of the bucket with a pencil, then mark the water level of the pool at the skimmer or on the steps. Wait 24 hours the measure the distance from the mark to the water in the bucket and the pool. They should be very close to the same. If the water in the pool is farther from the mark then the bucket then you most likely have a leak.
